Mapping your pathway to recovery
Whether you’ve experienced a neurological injury or are noticing changes in your memory, thinking, or daily functioning, we’re here to help. Our goal is to support your recovery with tailored assessments, practical strategies, and compassionate guidance to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
Services
I provide specialist neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation services for individuals who have experienced traumatic brain injuries — ranging from mild concussions to more severe injuries — as well as those living with neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease. My role is to understand how these conditions affect a person’s thinking, emotions, and ability to manage everyday life.
Through comprehensive assessment, I help identify areas of strength and difficulty, and work collaboratively to develop tailored, practical strategies that support daily functioning — whether that involves returning to work, managing household routines, or maintaining independence.
My goal is to equip people with the insight, tools, and confidence they need to navigate their lives with clarity and autonomy.
I also have a growing interest in working with individuals preparing for or recovering from bariatric surgery. This includes psychological assessment and support aimed at promoting long-term adjustment, well-being, and success following surgical intervention.
Neuropsychological assessment
Neuropsychological assessments provide a detailed understanding of how brain function is affecting thinking, emotions, and daily life. Assessments involve a clinical interview and standardised cognitive and psychometric testing to evaluate areas such as memory, attention, processing speed, problem-solving, and psychological and behavioural functioning.
Findings are used to support diagnosis, guide rehabilitation, and inform practical strategies for recovery and daily functioning. These services are available privately and through ACC funding.
Bariatric Psychological Assessment
Pre- and post-surgical psychological assessments are available for individuals undergoing bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. These assessments explore readiness for surgery, emotional and cognitive factors, and post-operative adjustment. The goal is to support long-term success through a clear understanding of psychological needs, behavioural patterns, and coping strategies. I am a member of ANZMOSS and work closely with the surgical team at Discover Weight Loss to ensure integrated care.
Fit-for-Work Assessment
Fit-for-work assessments help determine whether an individual is cognitively and psychologically ready to return to their role following injury or illness. These assessments consider the demands of the job alongside the person’s current functioning and well-being. They are often used to guide return-to-work planning, workplace accommodations, or medical certification. Assessments include cognitive and psychological testing, with clear recommendations for employers and treatment providers.
Meet Dr. Susan Mahon.
Neuropsychologist and Psychologist – PhD PGDipPsych

As a mother to a son who sustained a severe brain injury at birth, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that come with navigating life after neurological injury. This personal experience deeply shaped my path and continues to guide the way I work with clients and families. It’s what led me into the field of neuropsychology, where I now have over 15 years of experience in both clinical practice and research.
I work with people who have experienced traumatic brain injuries — from mild to more severe — as well as those living with neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease. My role is to help people understand how these conditions are affecting their thinking, emotions, and everyday functioning, and to develop practical, personalised strategies to support their quality of life.
I also have a growing interest in working with individuals undergoing bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, providing pre-surgical psychological assessments and support to help ensure long-term adjustment and well-being post-surgery. I’m a member of ANZMOSS — the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society — and stay up to date with best-practice in this evolving area.
In addition to private referrals, I am an ACC-registered provider for neuropsychological services, including comprehensive assessment, rehabilitation planning, and fit-for-work evaluations.
My approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and grounded in both compassion and clinical evidence. Clients can expect a safe, respectful space where we work together to understand what’s going on, identify what’s working well, and map out a path toward improved functioning and confidence.
I am actively involved in research — particularly in the area of concussion and traumatic brain injury — and have published in several peer-reviewed journals. I also serve on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand, and hold professional memberships with the International Neuropsychological Society, National Academy of Neuropsychology, New Zealand Psychological Society, and the NZ Special Interest Group in Neuropsychology.
